Deserts within Deserts is a journey of connection with nature through intuition. PABLO PRO travels between Sonora and Chihuahua, a vast Mexican territory where the author lives and photographs, for more than five months, his vision of a non-ordinary reality, a personal territory where there is no room for calculation.
His snapshots capture in a genuine logbook the journey of that wandering from the interior to the exterior, culminating in the discovery of a landscape that belongs to the collective unconscious present in open spaces, from the height of the gaze, where creation emerges in consonance of “the one who looks” with the environment.
This personal journey tries to generate a reflection not from the reason but from the emotion and the sensations.
“I came to Mexico with the intention of photographing only and exclusively cactus. I was always struck by the personality of these beings, so alive and so close. During the years that I lived in L.A. I had a very special experience with a San Antonio, a species that only sprouts one night a year and that, during five, allowed me to witness its flowering. Shortly after leaving the house, the cactus became ill. During our coexistence I found that cacti are the plants that most resemble the human condition: they are alone, like us, they have enormous wealth inside them, they have a deep wisdom, they need protection and they are real survivors. ”
The disturbing calm nature of the deserts, its almost empty and seemingly inhospitable space, arid, full of silences that are heard, where the uprooting thrives and time is eternal, could well be an exile of solitude and sterile fear. However, the acceptance of one’s own being and the agreement with the environment, turn the process into a revealing and integrating routine, where freedom resides with a capital letter, where recapitulating is a vital necessity, where one must open oneself to expose oneself, with the soul turned around upside down and emptied whole. The detached energy remains, lies in the sea of ??dunes of each of the deserts, hoping to nourish the next thirsty traveler.
A landscape populated with prints of innocence, delivery and correspondence, where beauty is interior, time is sustained and resonance natural light. Pablo Pro’s photographs are snapshots of his inner path to reach that state of grace inherent in the dispossession of any reference or condition, the key that opens the return to pure creative intuition, to his artistic and personal truth.
“My need to explore perseveres, I gradually achieve to equip myself with a diving suit and immerse myself in the environment, until I get to dispense with the oxygen cylinder and find the whole present in the apparent nothingness. Little by little, the immersion becomes more and more natural, until I feel myself in my own environment. I am stripping away from patterns, doubts and fears until I am aware that this must be my daily routine: in this world of results, the PROCESS becomes relevant. ”
Methodology and Development of work
The photographs are taken with a digital camera and tend to use angular optics (a 16mm-35mm optic). The author’s gaze -integrating in place without expecting anything-, wanders through space and stops for pure intuition, freezing moments of connection.
The retouching of the images is minimal, so as not to distort reality at all.
The series of images builds a field of panoramic vision, superior to that of the human eye, creating the sensation of being able to see 360 ??°. The photographs are taken not with the intention of making landscaping, but with the intention of placing the person in the place where they have been taken.
Impressions on paper in support of metraquilato. 20-minute audiovisual montage consisting of panoramic views where the desert and cactus come to life, dilating and contracting almost imperceptibly, as if breathing. The images flow between transitions transparent that allow to be perceived as if they were a single place that is mutating with the passage of time. The intention is to induce in the spectator a slow / meditative state of mind that allows him to appreciate the breathing of the cactus, his condition of living beings. What is intended is to synchronize the viewer with the tempo of the image / breathing so that their perception is more sensory. The sound reproduces a deep human breathing, in a meditative state, which is accompanied by the movements of the plants. The video will be launched with two projectors, in HD format, to create a more realistic panoramic vision.
This project is conceived to recreate the process lived in the desert through its atmosphere and sensations.
1.- STEP TO THE DESERT. A hall whose perimeter is “upholstered” by the desert landscape, with sand floor and a temperature of 40 degrees, the viewer is located immediately. “The door” has a photograph printed with the intention of prolonging the feeling of openness to the infinity of the environment.
2.- THE CACTUS. The collection of 19 cactus photographs (5x1x1, 9x1x1.3m and 5x1x3m printed in methacrylate) is preceded by a text that invites reflection and sharing a world of perceptions / findings.
3.- HARA. Projection room with sand floor and a 6×5 m screen equipped with a surround sound system, with a large central seat without backrest. In the darkness you hear the sound of a deep breath while watching a video montage of the panoramic photographs of the desert.
The intention is to induce in the spectator a slow / meditative state of mind that allows him to appreciate the breathing of the cactus, his condition of living beings. What is intended is to synchronize the viewer with the tempo of the image / breathing so that their perception is more sensory.
4.- REFLECTION Leaving the video room, you head towards the vaulted hallway, where you can hear sounds of water, a place for reflection and integration of the experiences lived within the exhibition.
The objective of this program is to create a space for learning and reflection to deepen the knowledge of the cactus. Cactaceae belong to the family of succulents, which are characterized by their extraordinary capacity to store water and have managed to live and adapt to an extreme environment in which no other plant could exist.
